~ Hot Air Balloon Cuppies ~

HOW TO:

Make hot air balloon cupcakes!

For these cupcakes I used candymelts. You can buy them at lots of online stores and also most large baking/hobby stores.

First blow up several balloons. You do not want them too big, just big enough to make the shape of your hot air balloons.

Next Pop the candymelts into a bowl and melt as directed on the back of the packet.

Fully melted it should look like this. Be careful, they can burn easily so pay attention when melting them.

Once you have your candymelts melted and your balloons ready dip the balloons into the candymelts and swirl til they are all covered apart for the area around the ‘knot.’

Now comes the tricky bit. You need to find some way of supporting the candymelt covered balloons whilst they dry. I popped mine into mini silicon cupcakes cases. An eggcup might do just as well.

Once the balloons are dry you can simply pop them, leaving you with a candymelt chocolate shell. Gently snap off any hardened dribbled bits you don’t like or keep them for that added whimsical look!

Next make and ice your cupcakes. Then all you have to do is assemble and decorate your balloon.

Poke cocktail sticks into your cakes, pop your dried candymelt balloons on top and pipe on your balloon pattern using buttercream or royal icing.

There you have it. Your very own, very tasty, whimsical hot air balloon cuppies. Enjoy!

How did you make the balloon part of it and keep it standing like that?

This is such a lovely idea, I’ve never seen hot air balloon cupcakes before!

OK, can I just say, your blog rocks?? Even for a gluten-free, casein-free, wanna-be-but-not-always cooking mama like me. I’m SO salivating on my keyboard.

Hi Gina, thanks so much. :) I’ll look into some gluten free stuff, see what ideas I can come up with. Xx

I thought these cuppies were fabulous and wanted to try them myself. I am having some difficulty.
First, the balloons popped when I covered them in melting candy and my kitchen and self was covered in the candy. :O
After I got the temp part down, dried them, and then popped them, I noticed that bits of the balloon and coloring of the balloon was left on the inside of my candy hot air balloon. Did you have this problem? Do you have any suggestions for me?
Very cute – I would love to make them work!
    Thanks

Hi Meagan. I did get a couple of bits of balloon left ‘clinging’ to the inside of the chocolate but they easily peeled off cleanly without leaving any residue at all. My balloons were water balloons as these were smaller and easier to handle. I cannot see why these would make a difference though. Maybe try with water balloons? Or a different brand of balloon. Sorry i cannot help more, this just didn’t happen with me at all. x
